Not all translations are destined for publication. Many translations are done so that a document in another language can just be read and understood. The translation unlocks the information that was hidden behind the language barrier.

While a translation that contains errors, omissions or otherwise distorts the message or facts contained in the original is worthless or even dangerous, many translations simply do not demand the level of polished language contained in our high quality translations.

It is often the case that clients do not have the time and budget required to produce a perfect and naturally sounding translation. They need to know what is said in the document so that they can continue with their work. While the translation may be the final product for the translator, it is no more than a single step in a much larger project for the client. Indeed, some translations contain nothing of value to the client, but that is not known until after the document is translated and the client is able to make that evaluation.

Examples of cases where a translation is needed only to make the contents of the original understandable in another language include memos and reports sent to (or received from) an overseas office of your company, abstracts of papers, patents and contracts that may or may not be of interest to you.
